Renewable Energy Program

The forum on Renewable, Energy Independence and Climate Change was held on last night at the library, from 6:30-8:00 pm.

The presenter was Lou Schwartzkopf, Minnesota State University Professor of Physics and he asked the question-Can Minnesota switch to renewable energy sources such as wind and ethanol fast enough to avoid shortages ? His assessment of where we stand now and a possible target for sustainable future was shared with the audience.

The audience learned about peak oil information and how many wind farms, ethonal plants and biodistillereries were needed just to sustain Dodge County residents not commercial properties. Very timely information especially with the increasing gasoline prices, fuel to heat our homes, and what to do with recycling.

Does Easter Seem To Be Early This Year?

The library will be open Saturday, March 22th and
Monday, March 24.

Interesting Facts About Easter:
  • Easter this year is: Sunday March 23, 2008
  • As you may know, Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after the Spring Equinox (which is March 20).
  • This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify Passover, which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar.
  • Based on the above, Easter can actually be one day earlier (March 22) but that is pretty rare.
  • This year is the earliest Easter any of us will ever see the rest of our lives! And only the most elderly of our population have ever seen it this early (95 years old or above!). And none of us have ever, or will ever, see it a day earlier!
  • The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228 (220 years from now). The last time it was this early was 1913 (so if you’re 95 or older, you are the only ones that were around for that!).
  • The next time it will be a day earlier, March 22, will be in the year 2285 (277 years from now). The last time it was on March 22 was 1818. So, no one alive today has or will ever see it any earlier than this year!

Only in Minnesota...

Only in Minnesota is it in the high 40's one day and snowy and cold the next. Yesterday was wonderful with all the melting going on and people walking around with light coats and no boots. It was great looking at something other that snow in ice in our yards.

Today, snow and slippery conditions and as usual lots of accidents seems people forget how to drive in it. I hope this might be the end but having lived over 50 years in Minnesota I know better just wait for the real heavy wet stuff in April.

FIRST DAY OF SPRING!!

YEAH!!! The first day of Spring. I am not a winter person and eagerly look forward to Spring. A few years ago I planted daffodils, crocus and tulips and they are already poking up through the ground on the south side of my house. I worry about them this time of the year as there is still more snow to come. But I do love it when they flower and their fragance.

Storytime Easter Egg Hunt 3/18/08

Children's Librarian Mary Rose Mataitis read books to the children, had them color, and then go on a Easter Egg Hunt. Here are some pictures from this special day.

PhD Student Jill Yamasaki

I was contacted by Jill Yamasaki (Jackie Keller's granddaughter)and asked if we could talk about our outreach program Books On Wheels (BOW) and our partnership with Prairie Meadow. She is a PhD candidate at Texas A&M would like to do a case study of the communication and sense of community between the library and Prairie Meadows.
l-r Jill Yamasaki, Library Director Bonnie Adams

Last Monday, March 10th I met with Jill and discussed our outreach program BOW and Prairie Meadows. I explained that our BOW does a bi-weekly program and/or craft with the residents and deliver library items requested. The residents especially enjoy the magazines with food receipes and outdoor pictures. I further explained the partnership means a great deal to Prairie Meadows, the residents, the library and its staff. We at the library are always striving to be a meaningful resource to all patrons of all ages.

This case study means a lot to Jill as she has spent years working in assisted living facilities and is interested in resident relationships, interactions, and quality of life. Jill plans to visit Kasson in the spring and be a participant when we make one of our bi-weekly visitis to Prairie Meadows. I look forward to seeing and working with Jill on her case study of seniors.

Kissing the Blarney Stone

Last night Pat Coy talked about her two travels to Ireland with her husband George. Pat used a map and pictures so that all could see the beauty of the land and sea. We loved the beautiful scenery, marveled at how narrow the roads and steep the mountains, and how far they travelled each day. Truly a great program. And yes, her husband kissed the Blarney Stone. Pictured above 1-r Pat Coy, some of the items she had on display that were bought in Ireland, a tea pot.

The next Hot Reads Program will be Kent Keller talking about his ocean sail from New Zealand to Fiji. A 1500 mile voyage across the open ocean. Do not miss this exciting program on Monday, April 7th at 7 pm.
