April New Books Part 1

Cat of the Century by Rita Mae Brown 4/6 Harry’s beloved and tart-tongued Aunt Tally is about to turn the big 1-0-0. The alumnae association of her alma mater sees an opportunity to honor the event and make some loot off the centennial as well. The plan is to hold a big fund-raiser in Aunt Tally’s honor to recoup some of the school revenue lost in the cratered economy. But soon there’s more at risk than investments and endowments.

First, an impending blizzard threatens to ruin the whole affair. Then a suspicious transaction is discovered in the association’s account: board member Mariah D’Angelo has mysteriously withdrawn and then replaced $25,000.

But was that enough to get her killed? Mariah’s car is on campus, she’s gone missing, and Tucker has found human blood near the school’s stables.

What’s behind the disappearance? Was it Mariah’s donations to crafty politicians and crooked charities? Her rivalry with fellow board member Flo Langston? And is there a connection to the forty-year-old unsolved death of an old acquaintance of Aunt Tally’s? Using animal cunning and human canniness, Harry and her menagerie of mystery solvers must sniff out the answers or—even at a hundred years old—Aunt Talley may outlive them all.

As Bonnie’s adventure unfolds, it quickly becomes clear that Claire’s new business isn’t the only excitement in store for her. Her cheating, soon-to-be ex-husband decides he wants her stake in Elm Creek Quilts, which threatens not only her financial well-being but her dearest friendships as well. Luckily she has the artistic challenge of creating her own unique Hawaiian quilt pattern to distract her—and new friends like Hinano Paoa, owner of the Nä Mele Hawai‘i Music Shop, who introduces Bonnie to the fascinating traditions of Hawaiian culture and reminds her that love can be found when and where you least expect it.

Why Being Happy Is Easier Than Being Miserable

I talked to one of my friends the other day and she was miserable on a really nice, warm Minnesota afternoon and I thought to myself how can you be that unhappy on a day like this. We all have days that overwhelm us but I try to find the good in everyday. I used to say to students or staff, in the schools that I worked in, "I start everyday with a smile on my lips and a song in my heart and heaven help the person who takes that from me." I ran across this article and thought this would be an appropriate thought for your day. http://www.dumblittleman.com/2010/03/why-being-happy-is-easier-than-being.html

I hate miserable people! OK, let me rephrase this last statement: I don't hate miserable people because to hate someone we first have to love them. But let's say I can't stand people who constantly complain, whinge, and choose to be miserable while they DON'T do a single thing to lift themselves out of their misery.

Being miserable sucks, but we all are at times - yes, even me. I have my bad times too. I tend to stick my head under the covers for a day or so before I re-emerge into the world.
Getting into a funk isn't planned; it just happens. Whether it's a sting of bad luck in life or some complicated chemical setup in our brain, it doesn't go away easily.

Depending on the day of the week, you answer here may vary, but: Is your glass half empty or half full? Is that always your answer? No? Well, it that your answer most of the time? There are two types of people on this planet: Those who are negative by default, and those who see the positive side, even in dark times. I consider myself to be the latter.

I take failure as a means to move ahead in life because I analyze my shortcomings and use what I learn to do better next time. If the Sh7$ hits the fan, I might get upset, angry or depressed, but I NEVER GIVE UP!

I'd choose happy over miserable any day. By choosing happiness we open ourselves up to experiencing great moments. By being happy we invite success, fun, opportunities and love into our lives.
Naysayers: Some people choose to be naysayers. They consistently complain, bully, whinge and find reasons to see things in a bad light. Naysayers are bitter people! Why? I don't know because my mind doesn't work that way.

Perhaps you can tell me.

It beats me really. Why would you want to make your existence on this wonderful planet a miserable one if you have a sound mind to choose otherwise? Do you choose happiness? If so, why? Why do you choose happiness over misery? Is it perhaps because doors open to you that otherwise wouldn't? Or is it because your outlook on life is generally positive like mine?

Did you know that your mind is directly responsible for your failures and successes in life? If you don't believe me do this little experiment:

Observe what happens to you when you feel miserable the moment you get out of bed the next time it happens. How does this influence your day? Then observe how great life is when your mind is positive and open to new experiences and opportunities.
How does this influence your day now? You should have no doubt that by choosing happiness over being miserable you hold the key to all the good things in life that are naturally yours. Are you ready to claim them?

Easter Bunnies at the Library

Last week library staff member Donna and I decided we were really tired of winter and it was time to get ready for Spring with the Easter Bunny and friends.

I found some of the decorations at the Dollar Tree in Rochester and I must have gotten there at the right time because there was a lot of Easter items. I went back on Saturday to buy some for me and all of the really cute bunnies were gone. There's a lesson there somewhere. Enjoy the pictures.
