in the improvement of library services.
The Friends of the Library October Halloween Spooktacular Event was well attended by the public on Monday night, October 22nd. The program centered around favorite scary stories of library staff, local patrons, and a guest from LaCresent area.
Library staff member Michael Riedel was the Grim Reaper and spoke on All Hallows Eve (Halloween) celebrations and traditions and introduced the readers. Pat Coy read a true story, "Horrors of Hefferon Hall" which takes place at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota. Tarik Kamel read "Tell Tale Heart " by Edgar Allen Poe. Peter Petersilie from LaCresent read "A Surprise Guest" by R.L. Stine.
The public thoroughly enjoyed the stories and hearing them read was a special treat. The Friends would like to thank the readers for agreeing to read, their long hours of practice, and sharing their love of reading through ghostly stories.
Vegetables are the topic of books and crafts this week at the Kasson Public Library. Come and hear how our children's library instructor makes this theme come to life.

While outside on Manhattan’s Midtown streets a fierce snowstorm rages, nothing
can dampen the excitement inside the elegant ballroom of Manhattan’s Pierre
Hotel. Hunt clubs from all over North America have gathered for their annual
gala, and nobody is in higher spirits than “Sister” Jane, Master of the
Jefferson Hunt in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Braving the foul weather,
Sister and her young friend “Tootie” Harris pop out to purchase cigars for the
celebration at a nearby tobacco shop, finding themselves regaled by the colorful
stories of its eccentric proprietor, Adolfo Galdos.
Yet the trip’s
festive mood goes to ground later with the grisly discovery of Adolfo’s corpse.
The tobacconist was shot in the head but found, oddly enough, with a cigarette
pack of American Smokes laid carefully over his heart.
When a similar
murder occurs in Boston, Sister’s “horse sense” tells her there’s a nefarious
plot afoot—one that seems to originate in the South’s aromatic tobacco farms.
Meanwhile, Sister’s nemesis, Crawford Howard, will stop at nothing to subvert
the Jefferson Hunt Club. There’s more than one shadowy scheme in the works in
Albemarle County, and some conspirators are unafraid of taking shots at those
evidencing too keen an interest in other people’s business. When Sister voices
her suspicions, she, too, becomes a target. Fortunately for her, the Master of
the Jefferson Hunt may rely upon the wits and wiles of her four-legged
friends—including horses Lafayette and Matador, the powerful hound, Dragon, and
even the clever old red fox, Uncle Yancy!

As much as the chocolate concoctions at TenHuis can tantalize people’s tongues,
Lee’s newest hire is more likely to make them wag. Forsythia “Sissy” Smith is
the granddaughter of Warner Pier’s only remaining resident hippie, and lives out
at the Moose Lodge—once an informal commune in the forest east of town. But the
fact that Sissy is a third-generation flower child is the least of Lee’s
concerns.
The previous winter, Sissy’s husband, Buzz, was found shot to
death, and local talk named Sissy the number one suspect. Even though her alibi
was airtight, the gossips are still pointing their fingers at her. Lee
sympathizes with the young woman—even more so when Buzz’s dad, a tough retired
Army colonel, threatens to sue Sissy for custody of her son.
Then the
chief gossip is found dead, with Sissy on the scene. Was she lured there? Or is
she the killer? Lee has a sneaking suspicion that there is someone even more
sinister to blame. Someone out to keep a dark secret from coming to light. And
they would have no problem killing a certain clever chocolatier who might
uncover the truth…
Chiaverini, Jennifer The Giving Quilt Pub Date 10/30
At Elm Creek Manor, the week after Thanksgiving is “Quiltsgiving,” a time to
commence a season of generosity. From near and far, quilters and aspiring
quilters—a librarian, a teacher, a college student, and a quilt-shop clerk among
them—gather for a special winter session of quilt camp, to make quilts for
Project Linus. (In real life, Chiaverini has long been active in this charitable
organization, dedicated to providing handmade quilts and blankets to children in
need.)
Each quilter, ever mindful that many of her neighbors, friends,
and family members are struggling through difficult times, uses her creative
gifts to alleviate their collective burden. As the week unfolds, the quilters
respond to Sylvia’s provocative question in ways as varied as the life
experiences that drew them to Elm Creek Manor. Love and comfort are sewn into
the warm, bright, beautiful quilts they stitch, and their stories collectively
consider the strength of human connection and its rich rewards.
Featuring
not only well-loved characters but also intriguing newcomers, The Giving
Quilt will remind us all: Giving from the heart blesses the giver as much as
the recipient, and while giving may not always be easy, it is always worthwhile.

The four dead guards didn’t concern Mitch Rapp as much as the absence of the
man they’d been paid to protect. Joe Rickman wasn’t just another foot soldier.
For the last eight years Rickman had ran the CIA’s clandestine operations in
Afghanistan. It was a murky job that involved working with virtually every
disreputable figure in the Islamic Republic. More than a quarter billion dollars
in cash had passed through Rickman’s hands during his tenure as the master of
black ops and no one with a shred of sense wanted to know the details of how
that money had been spent.
At first glance it looks as if Rickman has been kidnapped, but Rapp
knows certain things about his old friend that cause him to wonder if something
more disturbing isn’t afoot. Irene Kennedy, the director of the CIA, has ordered
Rapp to find Rickman at all costs. Rapp must navigate the ever-shifting
landscape of Afghanistan as the Taliban, Iranians, Pakistanis and Russians all
plot to claim their piece of the war torn state.
With Afghanistan crumbling around him, Rapp must be as ruthless as his
enemies and as deceitful as people in his own government if he has any hopes of
completing his mission.

often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is
remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges
have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number
five.
Who is the Racketeer? And what does he have to do with
the judge’s untimely demise? His name, for the moment, is Malcolm Bannister. Job
status? Former attorney. Current residence? The Federal Prison Camp near
Frostburg, Maryland.
On paper, Malcolm’s situation isn’t looking too good
these days, but he’s got an ace up his sleeve. He knows who killed Judge
Fawcett, and he knows why. The judge’s body was found in his remote lakeside
cabin. There was no forced entry, no struggle, just two dead bodies: Judge
Fawcett and his young secretary. And one large, state-of-the-art, extremely
secure safe, opened and emptied.
What was in the safe? The FBI would love
to know. And Malcolm Bannister would love to tell them. But everything has a
price—especially information as explosive as the sequence of events that led to
Judge Fawcett’s death. And the Racketeer wasn’t born yesterday . .

Eben and I hurried again to the beach. There, we talked and waded into the ocean
up to our knees--in our Plain clothes, of all things. And later, after the sun
and wind dried us off some, we rented a bicycle built for two and rode up and
down the boardwalk, the warm air on our faces.
That evening and the next,
we met at sunset, laughing together and talking about whatever popped into our
heads until, wonder of wonders, Eben reached for my hand! My heart beat so
wildly, I wondered if he sensed it.
But all too soon, we had to part
ways, our private time together at an end. Yet our meeting on the beach--as
romantic and special as it was--birthed a renewed hope in me. After all, it was
nearly a blight on any Amish girl to still be single at my age. Ach, but
Eben Troyer had surely changed all of that. Surely he had...
Delusion in Death by J.D. Robb Pub Date 9/11
It was just another after-work happy-hour bar downtown, where business
professionals unwound with a few drinks . . .until something went terribly
wrong. And after twelve minutes of chaos and violence, eighty people lay
dead.
Lieutenant Eve Dallas is trying to sort out the inexplicable
events. Surviving witnesses talk about seeing things—monsters and swarms of
bees. They describe sudden, overwhelming feelings of fear and rage and paranoia.
When forensics gives its report, the mass delusions make more sense: It appears
the
bar patrons were exposed to a cocktail of chemicals and illegal drugs
that could drive anyone to temporary insanity—if not kill them
outright.
But that doesn’t explain who would unleash such horror—or why.
And if Eve can’t figure it out fast, it could happen again, anytime, anywhere.
Because it’s airborne. . . .
Zoo by James Patterson Pub Date 9/3 World
All over the world, brutal attacks are crippling entire
cities. Jackson Oz, a young biologist, watches the escalating events with an
increasing sense of dread. When he witnesses a coordinated lion ambush in
Africa, the enormity of the violence to come becomes terrifyingly
clear. Destruction
With the help of ecologist Chloe
Tousignant, Oz races to warn world leaders before it's too late. The attacks are
growing in ferocity, cunning, and planning, and soon there will be no place left
for humans to hide.
Severe Clear by Stuart Woods Pub Date 9/18
Stone Barrington is called to Bel-Air to oversee an exclusive event that
will gather the top echelons of the beau monde: Hollywood starlets, socialites,
politicos, billionaires from overseas. It’s a task in which Stone has a personal
stake, and one that is made all the more pleasurable—though somewhat more
complicated—with the arrivals of two beautiful women with whom he’s intimately
acquainted.
But the grand occasion has also attracted a dangerous
criminal group with sinister plans. The hunt to find them leads Stone into a
complex web of deceit and misdirection, in a world where the intrigues of
government intelligence collide with the clandestine machinations of the upper
crust. As he draws nearer to his quarry, he realizes that the stakes are higher
than anybody could ever imagine . . . and that the enemies he’s seeking might
just be hiding in plain sight.
I Scream, You Scream, We all Scream for Ice Cream!!!
The Kasson Public Library's End of Summer Ice Cream
Party had over 146 children attend to make their very own ice cream. The
children are always excited about the prospect of making ice cream but the
reality of all of the shaking needed, cold salty hands is totally worth it when
they sample their ice cream.
The children learn the longer you shake the cream,
sugar and vanilla the firmer it becomes. But some can hardly wait to eat the
ice cream so they use straws to drink it like a shake. Others want to wait and
get the ice cream just right so they can eat it with a spoon.
A neighborhood couple walk down by the library on
Tuesday morning to see the children make ice cream They said
they thoroughly enjoyed watching the excited children.
The Kasson Public Library sponsored Jack Pearson singer/storyteller with a Minnesota Library Legacy grant so all ages could enjoy his timeless music.
Pearson entertained 82 people at the KM Elementary gym on Thursday at 1 pm. Pearson brought a music/story experience of imagination, spirit, and history on guitar, fiddle, 5-string banjo, and including his one-and-only amplified toy box lid. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed his performance as they clapped and sang along with the entertainer.
