National Library Week Star Employee

The Kasson Public Library Trustees and Friends of the Library celebrated National Library Week with a proclamation and an open house honoring the 2007 American Library Association Star Employee. Paula Talbert, Outreach Librarian was selected as the star employee because of her outstanding job as Books On Wheel (BOW) supervisor. Paula has only worked a year at the library but under her leadership the program has expanded to include intergenerational partnerships that include the senior center and KM Nursery group.

The Friends of the Library provided the punch and bars and also bought a book for Paula, Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions by John Thomas that she plans to share with the library and daycares. Paula was very honored with this award and in her thank you note wrote, " It is a great honor to be among people who have dedicated their lives to the library...to be able to work at a place that houses all of our future and past is honor enough...It starts by re-educating those who have fallen to the literary wayside...In closing I would like to thank all of you, the great seniors and inspiring daycares that helped me to be honored."

May Day Program at Prairie Meadows Senior Living

The "Library Ladies" Bonnie Adams, Library Director and Paula Talbert, Outreach Librarian visited Prairie Meadows Senior Living Center to deliver bi-weekly library materials and had a small May Day program for the residents. We had eleven seniors decide what they wanted their May Baskets to look like and what special treats would go in the baskets.

Last year the library board and staff recognized that the library is not accessible to a variety of groups. Our Books On Wheels (BOW) program was launched in March of 2006 with two senior centers as our first focus groups and have since grown to include ten daycares and Opportunity Services. The library visits the two senior centers every two weeks with books, audio books, magazines, and other library materials and also present a small program for the seniors. We would also like to add any homebound to our list that we serve every two weeks.

If you know of anyone that would benefit from this service, please call us at the library 634-7615.

Children's Storytime

Today at our Tuesday storytime we had 16 children and their parents come to hear stories about dinosaurs from Mary Rose Mataitis, Children's Librarian. They also listened to a dinosaur video and then colored a picture of their favorite dinosaur to take home. Everyone had a great time and all were excited about a special treat provided by one of the library staff on her birthday.
